  • May 1921Established as a Fisheries Experimental Station
  • Apr. 1949Renamed Central Fisheries Experimental Station under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI)
  • Mar. 1955Integrated into the Maritime Affairs Office under MCI
  • Oct. 1961Moved under the Ministry of Agriculture (MA)
  • Dec. 1963Launched as the National Fisheries Research & Development Agency (NFRDA) under MA
  • Aug. 1966NFRDA under the newly created National Fisheries Administration of MA
  • Dec. 1989Relocated in the Fisheries Research Complex
  • Jun. 1996NFRDA under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF)
  • Mar. 2002Launched as the National Fisheries Research & Development Institute(NFRDI) under MMAF
  • Jan. 2006Became an Executive Agency
  • Feb. 2008NFRDI under the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
  • Mar. 2013NFRDI under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries
  • Oct. 2015NIFS under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries
  • NIFS's function of enhancing fisheries resources was transferred to the newly established Fisheries Resources Agency in November, 2010.
  • NIFS was selected as the Best Executive Agency in April, 2011.
