NIFS announced that it distributed about 200,000 yellow croaker seeds to the relevant industry for the mass production of high-quality cultured yellow croaker, conducting on-site tests for the commercialization. For the preempitve response to pending issues in aquaculture of Jeju Island, including climate change and reduced productivity of olive flounder culture, the Subtropical Fisheries Research Institute of NIFS (Wimi, Seoguipo-si, Jeju Island) selected yellow croaker as the future aquaculture species in preparation for climate change including high water temperature* and has been implementing research on the development of specialized technology** for the production of yellow croaker with high commercial value. *The limit water tempreature for yellow croaker: 31℃ (olive flounder: 28℃) ** Specialized production: ① Spawning control for larger size ② Feminizing induction technique ③ Improving the skin color & health for high quality Consequently, last year, the Institute secured the specialized technology for the production of yellow croaker with high commercial value, female one with roe. This year, for the smooth industrialization of the technology, it will conduct on-site test research for the mass production by distributing 100,000 seeds (around 10cm of total length, 10g of body weight), from broodstock* reared and managed in the fish culture experiment station of the Institute, to the two private land-based olive flounder aquaculture farms (Jocheon and Seongsan, Jeju Island). *Formed a broodstock group consisting of 2,000 yellow croakers through sorting fast-growing one and managing genetic diversity → Stable production of high-quality seeds For the improvement of commerciality and quality management of cultured yellow croaker, NIFS will provide the technical support for monitoring the development characteristics and disease occurrence, environmental impact, economic assessment. In addition, NIFS will conduct research on the commercialization of entities reaching main product size (130-150g) after 1-year breeding by applying an optimal processing technology. |
