NIFS announced that it signed a MOU with the Gyeonggi marine fisheries resources research institute for the development and branding of region-specific varieties based on state-owned laver varieties*. *The state-owned varieties refer to the 20 new varieties developed by state, including porphyra yezinensis, porphyra dentata, etc. By signing the MOU, the two research institutes forged a partnership for ▲seed conservation and development of region-specific varieties as well as practical trials ▲ relevant technology and data exchange, ▲academic exchange, etc. Last year was the time when Korea laver industry had a moment in the global market, recording around $10 billion export amount. Under the impact of climate change including high water temperature, however, laver production volume fluctuated, calling for countermeasures for sustainable growth in the laver industry. To that end, it is imperative to develop resilient new varieties and distribute region-specific varieties. The needs have led NIFS to develop region-specific laver varieties in co-operation with four local governments including Busan Metropolitan City, Jeollabuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Incheon Metropolitan City*. *Busan Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute (20-), Fisheries Safety Center of Fishery Technology Research Institute (23-), Chungcheongnam-do Fisheries Resources Research Institute (23-), Incheon City Fisheries Technology Support Center (24-)
