Greetings to all. I am Kwon Soon-wook, the 43rd president of the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS).

NIFS is the only national research institute in marine and fisheries sector in the Republic of Korea, providing political and field-oriented support by conducting research on the overall fisheries industry that encompasses fisheries resources, marine environment, aquaculture, aquatic disease, food safety and processing, fisheries engineering, and marine bio-engineering.

At the moment, the fisheries industry in ROK calls for the strategic innovation with advanced technologies in order to actively respond to the depletion of fisheries resources due to climate challenge as well as an existential crisis in fishing villages due to rapid population aging, etc.

To this end, NIFS will do its utmost to realize sustainable marine and fisheries development through fisheries resources management, smart aquaculture technology, advanced seafood safety management at the production stage, fisheries disaster management, etc. by leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.

In addition, NIFS will become into a global leading research institute by disseminating research results while helping a culture that values a flexible and proactive organization take root through balanced communication.
