South Sea Fisheries Research Institute

National Institute of Fisheries Science
The head of the South Sea Fisheries Research Institute at the NIFS

We will become a fishery research institute that does our best to develop the affluent South Coast fishery industry.

South Sea is a natural place where a variety of aquatic animals and plants can live and spawn in abundance thanks to the topographical characteristics of peninsulas and various islands and the warm sea flowing with the Tsushima warm current. This place is a treasure trove of fishery resources that produces more than 60% of the total production of marine products in coastal waters of Korea.

Recently, red tide and jellyfish, which are harmful organisms, appear almost every year in Korea's fishery industry due to climate change, etc., and current issues include the decrease in fishery resources, the aging of the fishery population, and the increase in fishery product imports from around the world.

In order to actively respond to these domestic and foreign environmental changes, the South Sea Fisheries Research Institute is conducting such research work as management and evaluation of fishery resources, investigation of changes in fishing grounds and marine environments, development of technology to increase and aquaculture specialties of the South Sea, and prevention and control of diseases affecting marine life to strengthen the competitiveness of the South Coast fishery industry. All employees will work together to do their best to produce the best results from these studies.

Thank you.
