NIFS, First exporting of live-oyster to Russia
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2025-04-03 Read 555

NIFS announced that 4 tons of live-oyster will be exported to Vladivostok, Russia (approx 1,800㎞ in 4 days) by using the intelligent containers that NIFS developed through joint research with Geoje fisheries farming association and ARA F&D.

The containers are mounted with an automatic control system for water temperature maintenance, oxygen supply, etc., which enables to reduce the stress on oysters, increasing survival rates of live oysters with reliable quality in long-distance transport.

The achievement of this time is being recognized as a best practice of institute-private-local government partnership: a partnership built on the combination of NIFS's research on water temperature control technique and stabilization of transport system*; and Gyeongsangnam-do Province's project for manufacturing transport containers and establishing export logistics hub.

*The transport system consists of three parts: Power Source Part including uninterruptible power supply(UPS), circuit breaker, fuse, etc.; Control Part including temperature sensor, dissolved oxygen(DO) sensor, etc.; and Transport Part including oxygen generator, heater & chiller, large water tank, pump, etc.

NIFS had an experience in using live-fish containers to export king olive flounder from Busan to LA (17,000㎞ in around 13 days) in 2012 for the expansion of global market.

To expand future export areas of live fisheries products, NIFS has been conducting researches on the conditions of optimal water temperature and density to maintain survival rates even when the transport period is extended to six weeks from existing period of within four weeks.
