NIFS projected that the sea surface tempertaure(SST) in Korea this summer would be somewhat higher compared to the average of the past 30 years (1991-2020). In the Korea sea temperature outlook for summer 2025, NIFS projected that the surface water temperatures in coastal areas of the West and South Sea would be around 1.0℃ higher than usual. The outlook projected that strengthening and expasion of the North Pacific high in summer would cause the occurrence of extreme heat waves, resulting in high water temperatures(HWTs). When HWTs occur and how long they persist can be in flux depending on factors such as the withdrawal of seasonal front, onset of typhoon, the expansion of high pressure, current variability, etc., but there is a high possibility that HWT warnings will be issued around in the middle of July. Therefore, thorough prior preparation for the HWT damage in summer should be in place. Going forward, NIFS will swiftly provide the relevant data to fishermen as well as concerned organizations in line with the step-by-step response plan for summer weather warning, while continuously providing technical support to the sites for the prevention of HWT damage.
