On Friday, July 4, NIFS had a meeting for the discussion on mitigating HWT-caused damages to sea squirt culture with the people from industry, academia, institutes, and local governments.

In the discussion, there were subject presentations on the Results obtained from conducting an experiment of seed production and cross rearing of mother sea squirt collected from the East Sea, Plans of the sea squirt hanging fisheries cooperatives for the research or training fishery, and Management of sea squirt culture and prevention of soft tunic syndrome (STS) against high water temperature (HWT).

As this year is also expected to experience damages to sea squirt farms by a spike in water temperature, the participants exchanged opinions about pressing issues, including the measures for stable supply and demand of seeds, ways for monitoring area expansion to develop new farms, and development of superior seeds with fast growth and HWT resistance, etc.

Earlier, NIFS launched a task force (TF) team for stabilization of sea squirt culture in October of last year, discussing on the mitigation of HWT-caused damages to the farms and embarking on survey for the development of new culture farms and research on stabilization of seed supply and demand.
