NIFS, Forecasting the optimal time for this year’s laver and sea mustard culture
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2025-09-04 Read 488

On Septempber 4, NIFS announced the forecast of region-specific optimal time for seed collection* and temporary transplanting** of laver and sea mustard.

*The process involves attaching the laver’s reproductive cells (conchospores) onto cultivation nets

**The stage that adjuts the young fronds of laver to the seawater conditions for culture

The optimal time for laver culture (seed collection) is forecast like: Chungnam in late September; Incheon, Jeonbuk and Busan in early December; and Jeonnam in early-mid October.

In case of sea mustard, Chungnam and Jeonbuk are forcast in early and mid October respectively. In others like Incheon, Jeonnam, and Busan, between mid and late October is forecast.

The Seaweed Research Institute of NIFS projected this year’s optimal time for laver and sea mustard culture would be similar based on the result of analysis on water temperature data for each sea area (2020-2024).

However, the precipitation of this year is at the 67-96% level of the average year and Jeonbuk and Busan, in particular, have little precipiation at the 67-69% level of the average year, causing concerns over the delayed growth of laver and sea mustard due to the shortage of nutrients inflow from lands.

The President of NIFS (Mr. Choi Yong-seok) said, “To reduce the HWT damages to seaweed in the early phase of culture, it is important to check the information on the optimal time for culture and real-time marine environment (water temperature, temperature, etc.) provided on the website of NIFS (www.nifs.go.kr/risa/main.risa)."
