NIFS announced that it concluded the two new Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI) of the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) on November 18th and with Nagasaki University on November 20th, respectively.

The MOUs aim to expand Korea-Japan collaboration network in the field of marine fisheries and strengthen the research collaboration between the institutions by hosting joint symposia on fisheries technology.

In order to respond to the environmental changes in fisheries under climate change and the advancement of cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), NIFS signed the MOUs with UTokyo and Nagasaki University respectively with the aim of establishing networks for international research collaboration: AORI, which holds a strong reputation for atmospheric and ocean research; and Nagasaki University, which plays a leading role in aquaculture research.

Based on the research capacity and expertise that the two universities have demonstrated, NIFS will strengthen joint research between the institutions to build a consensus on and explore the measures for pending issues in fisheries facing the two countries.

NIFS President Choi, Yong-seok said, “In a situation where drastic environmental changes in fisheries are found due to climate change, etc., the Memorandums of Understanding this time mark a starting points for responding to the pending issues in marine and fisheries sector. Taking this MOUs, I also expect that we can contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of domestic fisheries industry.”
