NIFS announced that it published Korea's first “manual for marine mammal sigthing survey”, which standardizes methods and procedures for the survey of marine mammal with naked eyes. Building on the over 25-year experience in marine mammal sighting survey using the survey platform including boats and aircrafts, the Cetacean Research Institute of NIFS systematically organized the protocols for sighting such as fundamental principles and methods, performance procedures, safety rules, etc. The manual also details how to record by item, field survey photos, etc., adding further practical features for the researchers who have experienced difficulties on site due to the lack of standardized survey manuals. Taking the establishment of standardized manual for marine mammal sighting survey in Korea, the national capacity building is projected in response to preservation and management of marine mammal – which internationally attract much strengthened actions - through △ the enhancement of precision and confidence in monitoring data, △ the advancement in the monitoring system and data exchange with international community, etc. “The mannual published this time offers the first step toward expanding the base for marine mammal research in Korea and enhancing the credibility of study,” said President Choi, Yong-seok of NIFS. “NIFS will further strengthen the scientific foundation for the management and conservation of marine mammals in Korea.”
