NIFS announced the distribution of a "Guidebook for shellfish feed microalgae culture" to the field for the stable production as a part of stronger technical support. 

Microalgae control in shellfish seed production is a critical factor to determine the seed quality, but the field have faced difficulties in stable microalge culture due to the changes in water temperature under the impact of climate change. 

The guidebook produced and distributed this time was based on the research outcomes that the Southeast Sea Fisheries Research Institute conducted on microalgae. The guidebook also details the techniques for △water treatment system, △conservation of native species and mass culture, △diagnosis of problems in the culture process and countermeasures, etc., adding further practical features for the field to easily understand and utilize.

The Southeast Sea Fisheries Research Institute has supported the artficial seed production of shellfish by conserving* and distributing** the microalgae since 2022. Moreover, the research institute identified a new microalgae –Tetraselmis sp. which is smaller, nutritionally better, and grow faster than existing one–, enhancing the applicability.

NIFS president said, “Microalgae is a key factor in determining the productivity of shellfish artificial seed production. For the stable seed production, NIFS will keep doing research on the microalgae and providing stronger technical support by forging a closer partnership with the field.”
