NIFS announced that it published an e-book: a databook on the occurrence of hypoxic water mass (HWM) in the coastal fishing ground 2025, which covers comprehensively last year’s HWM occurrence in Korean coastal waters. 

The databook, organizing the 2025 break news data on HWM occurrence concisely, provides the spatio-temporal HWM occurrence by sea area. In particular, the databook is organized to allow for the users to tell the overview of monthly occurrence, initial occurrence and disappearance times by sea area at a glance, adding further practical features. 

From May to October of last year, NIFS conducted the field survey at two-week intervals for sea areas with high concentration of fish farms –such as Jinhae Bay of Gyeongnam; the coastal waters of Tongyeong including Jaran Bay, Goseong Bay, Buksin Bay, Hansan Bay, and Jinju Bay; Gamak Bay of Jeonnam; Cheonsu Bay of Chungnam, etc.-, analyzed the survey results, and delivered the analysis as break news. 

Given that HWM used to occur in May every year, NIFS will distribute the databook earlier for on-site damage prevention and capacity building for preparation. The databook can be downloaded on the website (www.nifs.go.kr). 

NIFS president said, “I hope the databook will serve as a tangible source for pre-emptive response to HWM occurrence aiming at minimizing the impacts of HWM on the aquaculture field,” adding, “Going forward, NIFS will contribute to mitigating the damages to fishermen by providing real-time marine environmental information consistently.”
