NIFS will distribute a “PINNIPEDS OF KOREA” poster which provides information on the ecology of three representative pinniped species found in Korea -Phoca largha (Spotted Seal), Callorhinus ursinus (Northern Fur Seal), and Eumetopias jubatus (Steller Sea Lion)- to enhance public understanding of protected marine species.

*Pinnipeds are a group of semi-aquatic, fin-footed marine mammals. They spend most of their lives hunting in the ocean but come ashore to rest and breed.

Based on the data from marine mammal sighting surveys (2001-2025) conducted by the Cetacean Research Institute of NIFS and public reports submitted through the Kakao Talk Channel, this poster is designed to help everyone easily understand the ecological characteristics and distribution of pinnipeds identified in Korean waters through visual representations. 

The spotted seal, northern fur seal, and steller sea lion featured on the poster are the protected marine species designated under the Conservation and Management of Marine Ecosystems Act. Among them, the spotted seal is designated as a Class ⵏ Endangered Wildlife species and a Natural Monument No.331, reflecting its exceptional conservation value. Each year, approximately 300 spotted seals migrate to Baengnyeongdo and Garorim Bay to forage and rest. 

The poster will be made available both online and offline: NIFS will distribute printed copies to relevant organizations and universities, while also uploading the file to its website (www.nifs.go.kr) for public access.
