NIFS, Providing site-oriented service for stable Pyropia seed production
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2024-04-01 Read 17

NIFS announced that it started customized service for Pyropia seed production site in April for the stable production and supply, which was the grounds for the KRW 1 trillion ($790 million) Pyropia export last year.

Under the recent radical changes in temperature caused by abnormal climate, Pyropia seed production has been experiencing frequent physiological disorders including the pollution of Pyropia shell-living conchocelis, immaturity, early maturity, and early release.

Those led to the irregular growth of Pyropia seed, causing difficulties to the stable supply during mid- September (shipping time).

To tackle the situation, NIFS provides services such as microscopic examination on growth state of shell-living conchocelis; on-site consulting on breeding environment & culture technology; and experimental dissemination of equipment for real-time enivronmental monitoring.

In particular, while frequently monitoring the growth and growth state of seed at the early production stage, NIFS will expand the microscopic examination service to make a final confirmation of seed maturity in August to September for the provision of healthy seed to culture households, and also conduct the follow-up monitoring for management.

Moreover, NIFS will provide strong technical support for the management of shell-living conchocelis during the period of high water temperature and information provision on water condition of seed hatchery, etc. as customized services.

In addition, it will support stable seed production by distributing HOBO, a device for real-time environmental monitoring, to make adjusting the time for seed collection handy.
